Proverbs 6

Proverbs 6 gave me more food for thought.....
My bible (The Student Bible.. New International Version) gave some information on verses 6:1-3 which helped me understand them.
"Proverbs warns against 'putting up security' for a neighbor - something like co-signing a loan for a friend who doesn't otherwise qualify.  Proverbs supports generosity, but not open-ended charity in which the amount you must give and the timing are determined by circumstances beyond your control.  Too often it leads to disaster."

Then verses 6 - 11 talk about not being lazy, but providing for yourself.
6-13 seem to refer to things that a villain or scoundrel would do.
And I am confused by verse 16:
"There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:"

How can there be 6 things he hates if there are 7 that are detestable to him?

The rest of the this chapter then gives more warnings against adultery.  When was the 'definition' of adultery changed?  Proverbs insinuates that adultery is when a man sleeps with someone else's wife.  Yes, I agree that is adultery.  But I also see it as adultery when a married man sleeps with an unmarried woman.  Though I am sure Solomon would not agree, as he had over 100 wives!

Debt - going in debt, backing up others so that they can go in debt.

2. How does the writer describe the results of this situation? 
It leads to disaster - poverty "and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

3. What does he suggest that one do to remedy this situation? 
"press your plea with your neighbor" and work hard for what you need so that you can provide your own provisions.
